John Peers lost in the second round of the NCAA Tennis Singles Championship to Pepperdine's Sebastian Fanselow at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. The loss ends Peers' singles career but he and partner Roberto Maytin advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles bracket.
Peers, ranked No. 19, lost to the 28th-ranked Fanselow in second round action on Thursday. Fanselow won the first set 6-2 but Peers countered with a 6-4 second-set win. Fanselow posted another 6-2 win in the third set to claim the victory and advance to the tournament's round of 16. Peers finished his collegiate singles career with a 30-13 record.
In doubles action, the fifth-ranked tandem of Peers and Maytin defeated 60th-ranked Sebastien Vidal and Jamie Whiteford of William and Mary, 6-3, 6-2. Peers and Maytin are 35-5 overall and extended their win streak to 12 matches.
The pair ranks No. 1 and No. 2 on Baylor's single season doubles wins list, Maytin has won 38 matches this season while Peers follows closely with 37. Lars Poerschke held the previous record of 35 which he set during the 2004-05 season.
Maytin and Peers will now face Michigan's Jason Jung-Evan King, ranked No. 29. They posted a round of 32 win over UCLA's 32nd-ranked Adrien Puget-Alex Brigham, UCLA, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
