Second-Round Big 12 Championship Results in PDF Format
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Baylor's junior duo of Chelsey Cothran and Jaclyn Jansen posted sub-par rounds Saturday, pushing the Lady Bears to seventh place at the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship.
Jansen followed her first-round 72 with a 71 Saturday and is in a six-way tie for second place at 1-under 143. The Effingham, Ill., native fell to 2-over on the day after the turn, but birdies on No. 5, 7 and 8 pushed her to a 1-under finish. Cothran, Baylor's leader in nearly every statistical category, fired a career-low-tying 3-under 69, which also set a Baylor 18-hole Big 12 Championship low.
"We improved our lies from the first round and hit a lot of greens Saturday," head coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "The greens have a lot of undulations and are quite fast, which makes it hard at times (to move up the leaderboard)."
Cothran's 69 was second only to Texas' Madison Pressel, who shot a second-round 66 to give herself a six-stroke cushion over the tournament field at 7-under 137.
"With Jaclyn's position and our lowest team score within reach, we have a lot to play for Sunday," Ferdon said. "We were as high as fourth during the second round, but about halfway through, we let it slip. We had a few three-putts and some double-bogeys.
No. 20 Texas overtook first-round leader Texas Tech to take a two-stroke advantage. Iowa State is second at 9-over, followed by Texas A&M and Missouri in a third-place tie at 12-over. Baylor is tied for seventh place with Nebraska at 19-over (301-294=595), just five strokes out of fifth place. With its second-round 294, Baylor established 18- and 36-hole Big 12 Championship lows, besting its final-round 295 in 2005 and its two-round score of 607 in 1999.
Thanks to her career-low-tying performance, Cothran is tied for 19th at 4-over (79-69=148). Both seniors Lene Hafsten-Morch and Morgan Chambers shot matching 77s and are tied for 36th at 8-over (75-77=152). Freshman Kaylin Terry is tied for 59th at 17-over (80-81=161).
"If we can finish our holes Sunday, then we should be in good position for a top-five finish," Ferdon said.
Impending inclement weather has forced an 8 a.m. CDT shotgun start for Sunday's final round. Live scoring will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
