WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball fell behind early and a late rally came up short as UNLV knocked off the Bears, 7-4, on Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.
Baylor (20-18) scored two runs in the ninth and had a runner on base, but Zack Hartman came out of the UNLV (25-14) bullpen to get the final out and record his sixth save of the season for the Rebels.
Dan Evatt led off the ninth with his team-leading sixth home run of the season, and Jake Miller drove in Landis Ware with a two-out RBI single. Evatt's homer was his fourth in the last five games and gave him three of Baylor's seven hits on the night.
"(Evatt) has worked really hard at both the mental and physical side and it is rewarding to see what he is doing," head coach Steve Smith said. "He and (Max) Muncy are the guys right now who give us the best quality at-bats every time they go up there."
Baylor used six different pitchers in the game. Jon Ringenberg (2-1) started on the mound and took his first career loss by allowing one run in his only inning of work. Ringenberg fell to 9-1 in his career, but with the necessary 10 decisions, he took over the top spot on Baylor's all-time winning percentage list.
Brooks Pinckard came on in relief and allowed only one run in a season-long 3.0 innings of work, but the Rebels broke the game open with three runs in the fifth against Tyler Bremer.
Trae Davis, Brad Kuntz and Dillon Newman combined to hold UNLV to two runs over the last 5.0 innings, but Cory Ginther and Jesse Garcia held the Baylor bats at bay.
Ginther allowed two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings, while Garcia (2-0) gave two runs on three hits in 4.1 innings of relief to get the win.
Max Muncy got the Bears on the board and cut the UNLV lead to 5-2 with a two-run single on a 3-2 pitch in the fifth, but the Bears couldn't add on despite having runners on the corners with one out.
"I think Muncy has made some of the biggest adjustments as a hitter," Smith said. "He has improved so much as a hitter that it is really fun to watch. This time a year ago he had hit 10 home runs ... right now he is spraying the ball around and got the only really timely hit we had tonight."
The Rebels got a run back in the sixth and another in the eighth to build the lead to 7-2. Evatt's homer cut the deficit to four, and Miller's RBI single brought the potential tying run to the on-deck circle, but Hartman got Logan Vick to fly out to end the game.
Evatt finished 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Muncy had one hit and two RBI in the game. Trent Cook went 5-for-5 with three RBI and two runs and Scott Dysinger went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI for UNLV.
The Bears return to action this weekend when they host Missouri in Big 12 Conference play. Due to the Easter holiday, the series will be played Thursday through Saturday. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., while the game on Good Friday will be played at 3 p.m. and the series finale is scheduled for noon on Saturday. Thursday's game is Dollar Hot Dog Night at Baylor Ballpark.
