Final Baylor Spring Invitational Results in PDF Format
WACO, Texas - After leading most of the day, Baylor's Chelsey Cothran was unable to overcome bogeys on four of her last five holes, tying for second Tuesday at the Baylor Spring Invitational. Baylor tallied its best score of the tournament during the final round, tying with Texas State for seventh place at 63-over-par (307-317-303=927).
Leading through 36 holes, Cothran led by as many as three strokes with six holes to play. The Springdale, Ark., native missed out on her first collegiate victory by one stroke, but managed to secure her career-first top-five finish with a final tally of 4-over-par (73-74-73=220).
"It was rough way to finish and I wish it could have been a little better," Cothran said. "I was trying not to get nervous, but I did. I felt like I was hitting the ball pretty well. I didn't putt as well as I could have."
Texas Tech swept the team and individual Baylor Spring Invitational titles. Alex Gibson shot a final-round 71 to win the individual title at 3-over-par (78-70-71=219). Cothran shared second-place honors with North Texas' Jacey Chun (75-75-70=220) and Missouri State's Kelsey Welber (76-75-69=220). Gabriella Dominguez of Texas Tech rounded out the top five, finishing fifth at 7-over-par 223.
"We let some shots drop Monday," Baylor head coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "The wind was pretty brutal coming out of the north and it was even unfamiliar for us to play in those conditions. We dropped more shots trying to finish up holes and the same little issues showed up again Tuesday."
Texas Tech held off a final-round rally by North Texas to claim the team title at 35-over-par (309-295-295=899). North Texas carded Tuesday's best round, shooting 289 to finish second overall at 45-over-par (310-310-289=909). UTSA and Missouri State tied for third at 53-over-par, while No. 28 Oklahoma finished fifth with a final score of 55-over-par.
"We knew Chelsey (Cothran) had a chance to win, so it was just a matter of her continuing to do the same things," Ferdon said. "I'm proud of the way she played. You have to learn how to win and that's where we're at."
Senior Morgan Chambers, competing as an individual, tied for 23rd at 15-over-par (78-77-76=231). Lene Hafsten-Morch and Jaclyn Jansen each shot 20-over-par to tie for 42nd, followed by Jordan Rhodes in 59th place (24-over-par 240). Kristen Hendrix and Kaylin Terry finished 66th and 69th, respectively.
With the regular season complete, Baylor will travel to Columbia, Mo., for the Big 12 Championship, which will be held April 22-24 at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
