LOS ANGELES - In an early season rematch, the ninth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team will play the finale of a three-match roadtrip at No. 10 UCLA on Thursday at noon PT/2 p.m. CT at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Lady Bears took down the Bruins earlier this season, 4-2, in a consolation match at the ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Va. Including that win, Baylor has won four consecutive matches against UCLA, and holds a 5-1 all-time record over the Bruins.
Baylor brings a three-match win streak and an 8-1 overall record into the day, while featuring ranked players at five of six positions in singles. At the top position, 11th-ranked Sona Novakova is 19-3 overall on the season, including a 9-2 mark against ranked players. At No. 2, Baylor has moved 51st-ranked Nina Secerbegovic into that spot over the last two matches and she has responded with two wins.
Junior Diana Nakic, who plays at No. 3, is ranked 36th with a 9-4 record on the season and a four-match winning streak. At No. 4, Karolina Filipiak is having an outstanding senior season, including a No. 70 ranking and a 17-5 overall singles record.
Senior Jelena Stanivuk, who battled injury much of 2010, holds down the No. 5 spot with her No. 94 ranking and 9-0 singles mark. At No. 6, Baylor has seen the return of senior Taylor Ormond over the last two matches, and also has freshman Abby Stainback to play the position.
In doubles, the Lady Bears have fought off early season struggles to win the doubles point in each of the past three matches. Stanivuk and Secerbegovic play the top spot, followed by Novakova and Nakic at No. 2, and Filipiak and Ormond or Stainback at the third position.
UCLA is 8-4 on the season, featuring four ranked singles players and two ranked doubles combinations. In singles, the Bruins have No. 64 Andrea Remynse, No. 73 McCall Jones, No. 119 Carling Seguso and No. 121 Courtney Dolehide. Reymnse and Dolehide are ranked 14th in doubles, while Jones and Pamela Montez are ranked 38th.
