WACO, Texas - UTSA took advantage of a two-out error in the fifth inning to score three unearned runs, and those proved to be the difference as the Roadrunners knocked off Baylor, 4-2, on Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.

Baylor (16-9) mounted a rally in the ninth, but UTSA (8-18) reliever Kevin Clarke struck out three straight batters to end the game with the bases loaded.

"It shows we are never going to give up on a game, but that is how we should be playing the entire game," Baylor first baseman Max Muncy said. "It shouldn't come down to us having to realize we need to come back."

Both teams struggled to score early in the game. Baylor starter Tyler Bremer held the Roadrunners to four singles in the first four innings, but UTSA starter Jordan Langley accomplished the same feat, holding the Bears to four singles through four frames.

Neither team could break the scoreless tie until the fifth, when a throwing error on Lawton Langford led to three unearned runs. Daniel Rockett was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second base on a wild pitch, but Bremer struck out each of the next two batters.

Riley Good followed with an infield single up the middle, but Langford faked a throw to first and had Rockett in a rundown after he rounded third base. With Rockett halfway between home and third, Langford's throw sailed over catcher Joey Hainsfurther and to the backstop, allowing both runners to advance.

Bremer walked the next batter, and with the outfielders playing in due to a stiff wind blowing directly in from center field, Tyler Carpenter hit a two-run triple over Cal Towey's head in right-center field.

Bremer got the final out of the fifth, but he was pulled after walking the first batter in the sixth. Brad Kuntz came on in relief, and after allowing a RBI single to pinch hitter Jason Mohn, he retired 10 of the final 11 batters. Bremer (2-2) took the loss after allowing four runs - one of which was earned - on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

"As a pitcher, you are always told to control just what you can control," Bremer said. "Lawton (Langford) made a great play in the first place just to get to that ball, and I think he just got a little over-excited."

Kuntz turned in the longest outing of his career, tossing 4.0 innings of two-hit, shutout relief. Langley (2-2) earned the win for UTSA, allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in 8.1 innings of work.

Langley allowed a home run to Muncy leading off the sixth, but he held the next 10 Baylor batters hitless before a leadoff single from Cal Towey in the ninth. One out later, Josh Ludy had a pinch-hit single that ended Langley's night, and reliever Matt Locus walked the only batter he faced, putting the potential tying run on base.

Clarke came in from the bullpen and came back from down 3-0 against Wes Mercurio to get a strikeout for the second out. Baylor's fourth straight pinch hitter, Brooks Pinckard, reached base after he struck out on a wild pitch that rolled to the backstop, cutting the UTSA lead to 4-2, but Chris Slater struck out on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

Muncy and Towey each went 2-for-4 and scored a run, with Muncy knocking his second home run of the season. Mohn and Carpenter had two hits apiece for the Roadrunners.

Baylor wraps up its 14-game homestand when the Bears host Lamar at 4 p.m. Wednesday for Dollar Hot Dog Night at Baylor Ballpark. True freshman Dillon Newman is expected to make his first start for the Bears against Lamar's Albert Lott.
