WACO, Texas - Tyler Bremer and Max Garner combined to hold Louisiana Tech to four hits, and Baylor's offense scored five runs in the first two innings on its way to an 8-4 win on Thursday night at Baylor Ballpark.
The 17th-ranked Bears (8-5) have won three games in a row for the first time since the 2010 Big 12 Championship.
"It was really good to see Tyler (Bremer) be effective," head coach Steve Smith said. "He has been scuffling a little bit coming out of the bullpen. It's his first start and I thought he threw well. Max (Garner) was outstanding. That is just such an inspiring thing to see how far he has come since being ill for a whole year. His stuff was very, very good."
Baylor's first four batters of the game all reached base safely against Louisiana Tech starting pitcher Trevor Petersen (2-1). Brooks Pinckard doubled, Logan Vick walked and Max Muncy singled to load the bases before Chris Slater knocked a two-run double.
After Muncy was thrown out trying to tag up on Joey Hainsfurther flyout down the left-field line, Jake Miller brought Slater around to score with a RBI single to give the Bears a 3-0 edge. Logan Vick's triple in the second inning brought home Steve DalPorto, and Vick scored on Slater's RBI single to stake Bremer to a 5-0 lead.
Bremer allowed just one hit through the first five innings, but an error leading off the sixth led to three unearned runs. Alex Williams' RBI single cut the Baylor lead to 5-2 and brought Garner on from the bullpen. Garner struck out Joey Ford with the bases loaded for the second out in the inning, but Clint Ewing knocked a two-run single to cut the deficit to one.
After a walk loaded the bases again, Will Alvis was retired on a flyout to end the inning, and that out started Garner's string of 10 consecutive batters retired to end the game. With 3.1 innings of one-hit, shutout relief, Garner notched his first career save.
Bremer (1-1) allowed one earned run on three hits in 5.1 innings to pick up his first win in a Baylor uniform. He threw just 49 pitches through the first five innings before needing 20 to get one out in the sixth.
The Bears added on two runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Miller and Cal Towey, and Muncy drove in another run in the eighth with a groundout.
Vick and Slater both went 3-for-4, while Miller had two hits and two RBI. Vick came up a home run short of the cycle, drew a walk, scored three runs and drove in one, and Slater walked, scored twice and collected three RBI.
Ewing had the only multi-hit day for Louisiana Tech, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI. Petersen took the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
The Bears and Bulldogs continue their four-game series at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Logan Verrett is slated to start for Baylor against Louisiana Tech's Chris Sadberry.
