WACO, Texas - Brooks Pinckard drilled the first pitch after the seventh-inning stretch over the right-field wall for what would prove to be a game-winning homer, and No. 16 Baylor baseball evened the series with a 9-4 win over Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
Pinckard put Baylor back on top after the Bears let a lead they'd held all game slip away in the top of the seventh. Baylor added on four more runs after Pinckard's blast before he was called in from center field to close out the game with 2.0 innings of hitless relief.
"Brooks is one of the most unique athletes I've ever seen," head coach Steve Smith said. "He touched 95 (mph) on that radar gun, he has run a 60 (yard dash) in 6.4 (seconds) and he hit a ball like you saw. He is just a really unique athlete."
Baylor (1-1) starting pitcher Jon Ringenberg worked his way out of jams in each of his three frames of work, stranding a total of five runners in 3.0 shutout innings, but he did not factor in the decision.
The Bears took an early lead on back-to-back RBI doubles in the first inning from Josh Ludy and Joey Hainsfurther. Baylor added on additional runs in the next two innings, as Landis Ware doubled leading off the second and came around to score after Steve DalPorto's infield single was thrown away, and Hainsfurther drove in Ludy with a RBI single in the third.
Ludy finished 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI, while Hainsfurther and Pinckard added two hits apiece.
Freshman Dillon Newman made his first appearance as a Bear when he came out of the bullpen to start the fourth inning. He needed just eight pitches to work through the fourth but ran into trouble in the fifth.
Nick Baligod followed a pair of singles with a two-run triple, and Jared Schlehuber brought him around to score on a RBI double to cut Baylor's lead to 4-3. After a walk, Newman got the final out of the inning and worked around an infield single in a scoreless sixth frame.
ORU (1-1) put runners on the corners with one out in the seventh, chasing Newman in favor of Crayton Bare. Pinch hitter Spencer Barnett laid down a safety squeeze bunt that scored the tying run when Bare's throw to the plate was not in time.
Freshman Trae Davis then came out of the bullpen for his first collegiate action and escaped a two on, one out jam with a groundball double play to swing the momentum back in the Bears' favor. Pinckard's game-winning homer came on the next pitch of the game.
A heads-up play by Max Muncy helped the Bears get going again after Pinckard's blast. Muncy drew his second walk of the game, advanced to second on Ludy's grounder to third and stole third base when it was left unoccupied after ORU third baseman Brett Sowers had to charge toward the plate to make the play on Ludy's grounder.
Hainsfurther drew a walk and Cal Towey was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ware then drew a walk of his own to bring in Muncy and extend Baylor's lead to 6-4. Jake Miller followed with a two-run single, and Logan Vick capped off the scoring by driving in Ware with an infield single.
Pinckard was called in from center field to the mound after Davis walked the first batter of the eighth. He induced a fielder's choice groundout and a groundball double play to end the inning then worked around a two-out walk in a scoreless ninth.
Davis (1-0) picked up the win with 0.2 inning of scoreless relief. ORU reliever Matt Rush (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on three hits and four walks in 0.2 inning.
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Junior right-hander Trent Blank is slated to start for the Bears against freshman righty Alex Gonzalez of ORU.
