THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On the final day of competition at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, Baylor's fourth-ranked doubles team of Roberto Maytin and John Peers was denied the main draw doubles title, after the pair lost its first match of the spring season, 8-6, to Stanford's 16th-ranked duo of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher at the Sherwood Country Club on Monday.

"It is clear to me that John and Roberto are as good as any team in the country," assistant coach Chris Brandi said. "The exciting thing is they have a ton of room to improve and we expect really big things out of them this year."

The No. 1 seeded Maytin and Peers kicked-off the match with a great run by holding serve, then breaking Stanford, before holding again in the third game to open up a 3-0 advantage. However, Klahn and Thacher, the second-seeded pair at the event, clawed back to put the match back on serve with Baylor leading 3-2. The teams traded breaks in the next two games and then each tandem held serve in the next two games to push the score to 5-4 in favor of BU.

Stanford would take its first lead in the match by tying it at five-all and then breaking to go up, 6-5. The Baylor twosome responded by immediately breaking back to knot the match at six games apiece, but Maytin and Peers then lost their next serve to go down, 7-6. Klahn and Thacher then closed out the match by holding serve to win, 8-6.

"For a match with this caliber of guys with their skill sets, you wouldn't expect that many breaks," Brandi said. "All four players have big serves, so you would think it would go a little more to form, but it didn't."

Maytin and Peers finish the Sherwood Collegiate Cup with a 3-1 record, which pushes their overall mark together to 13-3, after a successful fall campaign.

"Our guys were returning at a really high level, which is really exciting," Brandi said. "We are not really worried about their serves, they are going to do fine. They have been trying a few different things with their service game and I think today they just didn't mix up their serves enough and the other team just got in a little bit of a rhythm. That was difference."

Kike Grangeiro and Jordan Rux, who were scheduled to play in the doubles consolation finals did not have a match and finished the tournament with a 2-1 record.

Now after completing play in the four-day Sherwood event, the seventh-ranked Bears will return to Waco for their first dual match of the season on Thursday against Louisiana-Lafayette. First serve between the Ragin' Cajuns and the Bears is set for 3 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center. Live results of the match will be available on BaylorBears.com.
