THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Baylor's fourth-ranked duo of Roberto Maytin and John Peers took center stage for the Bears at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Saturday as the tandem cruised to a pair of victories in the 16-team doubles draw.

Maytin and Peers are the No. 1 seed at the four-day event hosted by the Sherwood Country Club that features players from No. 2 USC, No. 6 UCLA and No. 8 Stanford. The BU pair first dispatched of Jeff Gast and Evan Lee of UCLA, 8-5, and then proceeded to down Matt Kandath and Denis Lin of Stanford, 8-4.

The two wins set up Maytin and Peers for a semifinal match on Sunday at 12 p.m. (CST) against 51st-ranked Jaak Poldma and JT Sundling of USC.

The other three BU doubles tandems at the event all fell in first round action as Kike Grangeiro and Jordan Rux dropped an 8-5 decision to Holden Seguso and Maxime Tabatruong of UCLA. Then Julian Bley and Dennis Lengsfeld suffered an 8-1 defeat to Amit Inbar and Adrien Puget of UCLA, while Sergio Ramirez and Robert Verzaal fell to 16th-ranked Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford, 8-4.

Two of the three losing tandems bounced back to record wins in their consolation match as Grangeiro and Rux beat Lee and Gast, 8-1, while Ramirez and Verzaal advanced after their competition withdrew. Bley and Lengsfeld went 0-2 on the day as they were beaten in their second match by Peter Lucassen and Daniel Nguyen, 8-4.

In between the two rounds of doubles play, all eight Baylor athletes had their third singles match of the event. The four Baylor players left in the main draw all fell in straight sets in the quarterfinal round. The 22nd-ranked and fourth-seeded Peers was upset by No. 91 Ray Sarmiento of USC, 6-1, 7-6(7). The fifth-seeded Rux was beaten by 18th-ranked and third-seeded Daniel Nguyen of USC, 6-1, 6-0. USC's sixth-ranked and No. 1 seeded Steve Johnson got the best of Ramirez 6-1, 6-2 and Maytin succumbed to 15th-ranked and second-seeded Bradley Klahn, 6-3, 6-4.

The loss drops each of the Bears to 2-1 on the season and ends their singles play at the Sherwood Cup.

The Bears also had three players in the singles consolation bracket with Bley taking a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Stanford's Jamin Ball. On Sunday, Bley will face USC's Sundling at 1:30 p.m. (CST) in the consolation semifinals.

In other consolation action, Grangeiro lost to 84th-ranked Lucassen 6-3, 6-2 and Verzaal was tripped up by 64th-ranked Tabatruong 6-2, 6-2. The consolation loss ends both Grangeiro and Verzaal's singles play at the tournament. Both Bears posted a 1-2 mark in the competition.

In singles back draw play, Lengsfeld earned his first victory as a Bear with a 6-2, 6-1 drubbing of UCLA's Lee.
