WACO, Texas - The fourth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team was well represented in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association final rankings released recently. The Lady Bears had four singles players and two doubles tandems listed in the rankings.
Baylor, compiled a record of 30-3, finished the season ranked among the top six for the third straight year. Since 2005, the Lady Bears have advanced to at least the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, with a semifinal appearance in 2008 and quarterfinal appearances in 2006, 2009 and 2010. The No. 4 season-ending rank for Baylor ties the all-time best after the 2008 squad achieved the same feat.
The Lady Bears, who ran their Big 12 regular season win streak to 42 matches and their overall Big 12 win streak to 56 matches, won the conference regular season crown for the sixth consecutive season and the conference tournament crown for the fifth straight season.
Individually, the Lady Bears continued a long streak of success as senior Lenka Broosova is in the singles rankings for the fourth consecutive season. Junior Taylor Ormond has finished each of her three seasons in the rankings, while sophomore Nina Secerbegovic and senior Csilla Borsanyi finished the season ranked in each of their two seasons at Baylor. In doubles, Broosova is ranked for the fourth time, junior Jelena Stanivuk is ranked for the third time and Borsanyi earned her second consecutive ranking.
Broosova, who earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles for the third consecutive season, finishes this season ranked ninth. She will end her career at Baylor as the all-time singles (154) and doubles (120) career wins leader. In 2010, Broosova was also named the ITA Texas Region Player of the Year, the Big 12 Player of the Year and First Team All-Big 12 in both singles and doubles for the fourth consecutive season. In the NCAA Singles Championships, Broosova made a run to the Round of 16.
The sophomore Secerbegovic, finished the season ranked 16th after her run to the NCAA Quarterfinals in the singles tournament. She left her mark on the regular season record books at BU after putting together a singles record of 43-5. Her total of 43 wins marks the third highest in single-season Baylor history, while her .896 winning percentage is second all-time. Secerbegovic also had two win streaks of at least 15 matches, including an 18-0 stretch to open the dual-match season.
Ormond, who earned a season-ending ranking of 72, compiled a 21-10 record this year, including a 7-4 mark against ranked opponents. She also excelled in the classroom at Baylor, earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, Academic All-Big 12 and Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll status.
Baylor's fourth ranked singles player, Borsanyi, finished with a 15-match win streak in singles to earn a No. 94 ranking. Possibly Baylor's hottest player down the stretch, she compiled a 29-10 record during the year, including a 9-2 mark in Big 12 play.
In doubles, the steady duo of Broosova and Borsanyi finished the season ranked ninth after making a run to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships. The duo finished with a team-leading 28-6 record, leading to a Baylor single-season record .824 winning percentage.
Despite not being ranked all season, Baylor's duo of Secerbegovic and Stanivuk leaped into the final ranking at No. 62. The duo was unbeatable after joining forces midway through the season, compiling a 17-0 record. After shuffling lineups around early in the dual-match season, ITA Texas Region Coach of the Year Joey Scrivano, put the pair together during a crucial west-coast swing in matches against UCLA and USC.
