WACO, Texas - Six Baylor baseball student-athletes were selected Tuesday on the second day of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Bears had three seniors, two juniors and one sophomore selected between the 14th and 30th rounds.
Senior second baseman Raynor Campbell was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 23rd pick of the 14th round (438th overall). Junior right-handed pitcher Craig Fritsch was chosen with the 26th pick of the 16th round (501st overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies, and right-handed pitcher and center fielder Brooks Pinckard was taken by the Chicago Cubs as a draft-eligible sophomore in the 18th round (550th overall).
Senior catcher Gregg Glime was chosen with the 22nd pick of the 24th round (737th overall) by the Florida Marlins, while co-captain and fellow senior Willie Kempf was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 19th pick of the 27th round (824th overall). Junior right-handed pitcher Shawn Tolleson was the final Bear selected on day two, going as the 27th pick of the 30th round (922nd overall) to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In addition to the six current student-athletes, one Baylor signee was selected. Trae Davis of Mexia High School in Mexia, Texas, will have to decide whether to sign a professional contract with the Texas Rangers, who selected him with the 21st pick of the 29th round (886th overall), or to play collegiate baseball at Baylor.
A product of Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, Campbell earned honorable mention all-conference honors after he hit .335 with 15 doubles, seven home runs and 41 RBI during his senior campaign. Campbell also scored 39 runs, walked 19 times and stole 12 bases for the Bears. A four-year letterwinner, he ended his Baylor career ranked in the top 10 in program history in a number of career offensive categories.
Campbell ranks fourth on Baylor's Big 12 games played list (104), ninth in at-bats (768), second in Big 12 at-bats (390), tied for seventh in runs in Big 12 play (68), 10th in hits (234), fourth in hits in Big 12 play (121), eighth in multi-hit games (71), seventh in multi-hit games in Big 12 play (36), tied for seventh in doubles in Big 12 play (21), tied for ninth in Big 12 RBI (59), 10th in Big 12 extra-base hits (35), tied for seventh in total sacrifices (23) and tied for seventh in Big 12 steals (13). He also ranks fifth in assists in Big 12 play (195).
Fritsch, Pinckard and Tolleson will all have until the August 16 deadline to decide whether to sign professional contracts are return to Baylor to compete during the 2011 baseball season.
Fritsch, a product of Round Rock High School in Round Rock, Texas, worked as both a starter and a reliever during the 2010 season. He posted a 2-4 record with a 3.68 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 71.0 innings over 19 appearances, eight of which were starts. Fritsch's 3.68 ERA ranks 10th in the Big 12 Conference, and his 71.0 innings pitched were 16.2 more than either of his first two seasons at Baylor.
A two-way player, Pinckard was eligible for the draft as a sophomore after taking a redshirt season in his first year with the Baylor program. In addition to serving as the Bears' everyday center fielder and No. 2 batter in the lineup, Pinckard also posted a 2.45 ERA in 33.0 innings over 23 appearances on the mound. He recorded 12 saves, setting a new record for most saves by a sophomore in program history.
Pinckard was named first-team all-conference as a utility player, and he is the only player from the Big 12 Conference on the inaugural Jon Olerud Two-Way Player Award watch list. He hit .305 with 12 doubles, a team-leading six triples, two home runs, 28 RBI and 41 runs scored. He also stole 18 bases in only 20 attempts, giving him the highest stolen bases total by a Baylor player since Seth Fortenberry stole 22 bases in 2006.
Glime, a senior two-time captain, turned in the best season of his career in 2010. He hit .248 with 12 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 43 RBI and 27 runs scored. He notched a total of three home runs and 34 RBI in his first three seasons at Baylor. In addition to his improved offense, the backstop from Aurora, Colo., threw out 25 of 52 attempted base stealers and committed just three errors while catching in 50 games.
Kempf, a native of Castroville, Texas, also had a career year in 2010. The right-handed pitched led the Baylor staff with a 9-2 record and a 3.02 ERA. He pitched in 22 games, 12 of which were starts, working 83.1 innings on the mound and striking out 80 batters with just 28 walks. His nine wins were the most in a season by a Baylor pitcher since 2005, and his 22 career wins were 10 more than any other player on the Baylor roster.
Tolleson, a junior from Allen, Texas, went 2-7 with a 5.17 ERA while striking out 84 batters and issuing just 29 walks in 76.2 innings of work. He made 13 starts and three relief appearances, recording one save. His best outing of the 2010 season came on national television, when he held top-ranked Texas to one run on six hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts on May 1.
This marks the 13th consecutive season in which the Bears have had multiple players selected in the draft. The 2010 MLB Draft concludes with rounds 31 through 50 on Wednesday.
