WACO, Texas - Five student-athletes from Baylor's 2010 baseball team have signed professional contracts after being selected in last week's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Senior second baseman Raynor Campbell, who became the first Baylor player chosen when the San Francisco Giants called his name in the 14th round, has signed a contract and reported to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Northwest League.
Junior right-handed pitcher Craig Fritsch has signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, who selected him in the 16th round. Fritsch was also chosen in the 2009 MLB Draft, but chose to return to Baylor for the 2010 season. He has reported to the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League.
Senior catcher Gregg Glime signed a contract with the Florida Marlins after being selected in the 24th round, while senior right-handed pitcher Willie Kempf signed a contract with the Atlanta Braves, who chose him in the 27th round. The former roommates have both begun their professional careers in the Gulf Coast League.
Junior right-handed pitcher Shawn Tolleson has agreed to terms on a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers after he was selected in the 30th round of the draft. Tolleson will report to the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League.
Though two of the five signees were juniors, all five spent four years in the Baylor program, as Tolleson and Fritsch both sat out the 2007 season as redshirts.
Sophomore outfielder/right-handed pitcher Brooks Pinckard is the lone Baylor draftee that remains unsigned. Pinckard was the third Baylor player selected when the Chicago Cubs called his name in the 18th round. He'll have until the August 16 deadline to decide whether to sign a professional contract or return to Baylor for his junior season.
