AUSTIN, Texas - A missed opportunity to tie the game in the sixth was the last chance the Bears would have, as second-ranked Texas took advantage of the momentum to extend its lead to 4-1 on its way to completing the series sweep against Baylor on Sunday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field.

After allowing two singles in the first inning, Texas starter Brandon Workman settled down and held Baylor hitless until Don Lambert led off the sixth inning with a single up the middle.

Lambert moved up to third base when Jake Miller's bunt was thrown away by Workman trying to get the lead runner. Logan Vick followed with a RBI double to the wall in right-center that cut the Texas lead to 2-1, but Workman struck out the next two batters before turning the ball over to Andrew McKirahan, who got the third straight strikeout to strand the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

"Honestly, while (Texas) didn't make a ton of mistakes, in each one of the games we had an opportunity," head coach Steve Smith said. "I thought most of our mistakes were on the offensive side with the inability to make an adjustment and an inability to stay consistent with a two-strike approach. Defensively we played it pretty well and I think we pitched it pretty well."

That missed chance to at least tie the game proved costly for the Bears, as Brandon Loy led off the bottom half of the inning with a double and came home on Tant Shepherd's RBI single to extend the Longhorns' lead back to two runs at 3-1.

Cameron Rupp followed with a double down the left-field line that chased Fritsch from the game in favor of Josh Turley. The freshman lefty got a tapper back to the mound for the first out, but Kevin Lusson hit a sacrifice fly to right to extend Texas' lead to 4-1 before Connor Rowe grounded out to end the inning.

Fritsch (0-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout in 5.0 innings of work. Workman (9-1) picked up the win by allowing just an unearned run on four hits in 5.2 innings.

Rupp got the scoring started when he drew a walk leading off the second inning, and after moving up on a sacrifice bunt, he scored on Kevin Keyes single up the middle off the glove of a diving Miller. That gave Texas a 1-0 lead, but Fritsch got a groundball double play to get out of the inning without further damage.

Texas added an insurance run in the third when Rowe led off with triple to deep center field that was nearly caught by Lambert, and two batters later, Cohl Walla brought Rowe home with a groundout.

The Bears' only baserunner after the missed opportunity in the sixth came when Max Muncy reached on a fielding error, and Stayton Thomas came on in relief to get the final seven outs in order to record his first save of the season.

Willie Kempf worked 2.0 inning of shutout relief with three strikeouts for Baylor, and Vick had half of the Bears' hits, going 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

Loy was the only Longhorn to record multiple hits; he went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

The Bears have the next 11 days off before returning to Big 12 action with a three-game series at Texas Tech beginning on May 14. The three games in Lubbock, Texas are the last regular season road contests on Baylor's 2010 schedule.
