COLUMBIA, Mo. - Baylor used three big innings to win game one 20-6, and then the Bears scored in six different innings on their way to a 7-3 victory in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader against Missouri at Taylor Stadium.
Saturday marked the first time the Bears (15-9, 3-3 Big 12) won both games of a Big 12 Conference road doubleheader since doing so on May 1, 2004 at Kansas State. Missouri (14-11, 1-4 Big 12) had lost just two home games all season before Saturday's games.
Game One: Baylor 20, Missouri 6 (8 innings)
Baylor turned a 6-5 deficit into a blowout win with 15 runs over the final two innings in game one.
The Bears trailed by a run heading to the seventh inning, but responded with their two biggest innings of the season, as they scored seven runs in the seventh and eight in the eighth.
Baylor had squandered an early 5-0 lead before rallying for their ninth comeback win of the season.
Tyler Collins got the Bears on the board with a RBI double in the second, and Gregg Glime followed with a three-run homer. Two batters later, Logan Vick knocked his fifth home run of the season to give Baylor an early 5-0 lead.
BU starter Shawn Tolleson held Missouri scoreless until Dane Opel hit a one-out solo homer in the fourth, cutting the Baylor lead to 5-1.
Tolleson was pulled due to a high pitch count after he allowed a leadoff single in the sixth, and the Baylor bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Josh Turley allowed three runs in 0.2 inning, and he was pulled after Aaron Senne tied the game with a two-run single.
Kolt Browder (2-0) picked up the win after getting the final out in the sixth, but not before the Tigers took the lead when Eric Garcia scored on Landis Ware's two-out error, giving Missouri a 6-5 lead.
Tolleson did not factor in the decision after allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 5.0 innings.
Missouri starter Eric Anderson was in line to get the win when he was turned the ball over the his bullpen after allowing five runs in 6.0 innings, but the Missouri relievers couldn't keep the Baylor bats at bay.
Joey Hainsfurther tied the game with a RBI single, Raynor Campbell and Max Muncy followed with consecutive RBI singles, and Jon Ringenberg added a RBI double to put the Bears on top 9-6.
Ware, who had started the rally with a double leading off the inning, capped the scoring in the seventh with a three-run double.
The Bears added on eight runs as six different players collected RBI in the next inning. Muncy, Ringenberg, Glime and Ware had RBI singles, Vick drew his third walk of the game with the bases loaded, and Campbell doubled for the second time in the inning to drive in a pair of runs.
Craig Fritsch came on from the bullpen and put up zeroes in the seventh and eighth to preserve the win.
Campbell, Collins and Ware had three hits apiece, and Vick, Hainsfurther, Muncy, Ringenberg and Glime added two hits each. Vick drew three walks, scored twice and drove in two runs, while Glime and Ware each collected four RBI.
Game Two: Baylor 7, Missouri 3
After winning with three big innings in game one, the Bears used a small-ball approach to take the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Baylor scored in six different innings and the Bears didn't put up a crooked number until they scored two in the ninth on their way to a 7-3 series-clinching win.
BU starter Logan Verrett (3-2) picked up the win after allowing just one run on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
The Bears got on the board in the second when Max Muncy homered off the scoreboard beyond the left-center field wall for his seventh longball of the year.
Raynor Campbell added to the Bears' lead with a RBI single in the fourth, and Tyler Collins singled, stole second base and came home on Abel Baker's fifth-inning sacrifice fly to extend Baylor's lead to 3-0.
Campbell added a solo homer in the sixth, and Landis Ware hit a solo homer of his own in the seventh to give Baylor a 5-0 lead.
Verrett cruised through his first six innings. He didn't allow any Missouri baserunners to reach third base until Blake Brown came home to score on Ben Turner's RBI double in the seventh.
Verrett walked the next batter, and then turned the ball over to Kevin Winter, who got Jonah Schmidt to popout to end the inning with BU still on top 5-1.
Dane Opel's RBI double in the eighth cut the lead to 5-2, but with the potential tying run at the plate, Brooks Pinckard got Brown to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Baker doubled leading off the ninth and came around to score when Ware reached on an error. Pinckard gave himself another insurance run with a RBI single that extended Baylor's lead to 7-2.
Missouri starter Nick Tepesch (2-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs - four of which were earned - on seven hits in 8.2 innings.
Andrew Thigpen hit a two-out RBI double in the ninth, scoring the first earned run of the year against Pinckard, but the sophomore closer bounced back and struck out Aaron Senne to end the game and earn his seventh save of the season.
Campbell and Tyler Collins both went 2-for-4, and Ware, Muncy and Campbell each homered for the Bears. Opel had Missouri's only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
The Bears go for the series sweep when they meet Missouri for the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday. With a win, Baylor would sweep a Big 12 road series for the first time since April 17, 2005, when they swept a three-game set at Kansas.
