IRVING, Texas - Baylor's women's tennis team placed five student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 team as announced by conference officials on Tuesday. Among the five, three were honored for the second consecutive season.
Four of the five achieved first team status, with one on the second team. Making up Baylor's first team selections was two-time honorees Taylor Ormond and Karolina Filipiak, along with first-time honorees Csilla Borsanyi and Nina Secerbegovic. Jelena Stanivuk was also honored for the second year in a row, earning a spot on the second team.
Ormond, a native of Hamilton, Ontario majoring in English, is currently ranked 68th in singles and has compiled a 21-9 mark in singles play. Filipiak, a psychology major from Poznan, Poland, has been possibly Baylor's most improved player on the season, compiling a singles record of 25-7, including a current eight-match win streak.
Borsanyi, majoring in fashion merchandising from Siofok, Hungary, is currently ranked No. 98 and on a nine-match win streak with an overall singles record of 23-10. Secerbegovic, a native of Tuzla, Bosnia & Herzegovina, majoring in business, is ranked No. 18 and leads Baylor in singles wins with a 33-4 record.
Stanivuk, a general studies major from Tucepi, Croatia, has battled injuries all season, but managed to compile an 11-5 record, including a five-match win streak.
The five honorees for Baylor in one season marks the most for any BU squad in the 14-year history of the Big 12. The Lady Bears' previous best was four honorees in 1999.
Baylor, ranked No. 1 in the nation according to this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, will be in action next at the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas. The Lady Bears will take on the winner of Colorado and Kansas State on Friday, April 30 at 9 a.m.
