SORRENTO, Fla. - Behind a solid final round by sophomore Chelsey Cothran, the Baylor women's golf team finished fifth overall Tuesday at the UCF Challenge.
Baylor posted its highest single-round score (309) of the tournament, concluding the event at 43-over (300-298-309=907). Texas A&M (293-305-295=893) won the tournament, two shots ahead of second-place Georgia State (292-299-304=895). Coastal Carolina (302-298-304=904) and College of Charleston (299-300-306=905) finished ahead of Baylor in third and fourth place, respectively.
"It was a very tough day with very windy conditions," Baylor head women's golf coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "We got off to an extremely rough start, but I was proud of how our team rallied to finish."
Cothran registered just the second top-10 finish of her career, finishing tied for sixth with a career-low 5-over 221. Cothran's sixth-place finish is tied for the best showing of her career. She finished tied for sixth at the Maxwell-Berning Classic in spring 2009.
Lene Hafsten-Morch carded a final-round 79 to finish tied for 29th at 13-over (75-75-79=229). Senior Hannah Burke and freshman Melanie White both ended the UCF Challenge tied for 38th overall with a 16-over 232. After firing a second-round even-par 72 Monday, Jaclyn Jansen shot a 9-over 81 Tuesday for a 50th-place showing at 19-over 235.
Freshman Karianne Hillaas, who was making her Baylor debut at RedTail, finished the tournament 76th overall at 29-over 245.
"We beat the teams we needed to beat," Ferdon said. "I liked the golf course and I think it was a really good test for us and similar to the ones we'll face when we head out west in the coming days."
The Baylor Lady Bears will return to action at next week's UNLV Spring Invitational March 8-10 in Boulder City, Nev.
