WACO, Texas - Willie Kempf battled through a day when he didn't have his best command, and all nine Baylor starters scored at least once as the Bears completed a three-game sweep of Illinois-Chicago with a 15-2 win Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
Kempf (3-1) earned the win despite walking five batters in 5.0 innings. He allowed just two hits and a pair of unearned runs.
The Bears held UIC to just three hits, and the game was called in the seventh inning due to the travel day run rule. Baylor (11-6) swept UIC (2-11) for its first non-conference series sweep since March 10, 2008 at Mississippi State.
The Bears got at least one run from all nine starters, and by building a big lead early in the game, Baylor was able to bring eight position players off the bench.
Logan Vick got the Bears started early when he hit the first pitch from UIC starting pitcher Chris Kovacevich (0-4) for an opposite-field home run. Joey Hainsfurther added a RBI double to give Baylor a 2-0 advantage.
The Bears added two more runs in the third, but UIC took advantage of a pair of Baylor errors to plate two unearned runs in the fourth, cutting its deficit to 4-2.
That's when Baylor broke the game open, sending 12 batters to the plate in a six-run bottom of the fourth. Steve DalPorto led off with a double, chasing Kovacevich in favor of reliever Brad Riegler, who lasted just 0.2 inning.
Vick walked and Hainsfurther knocked a three-run homer for his third hit of the day. After Max Muncy and Chris Slater singled, Jake Miller knocked a two-run double off the top of the wall in left-center, and Abel Baker followed with a RBI single.
DalPorto followed with his second double of the inning, and Vick drew his second walk of the frame, ending Riegler's day. The inning finally came to an end when Brooks Pinckard's liner was snagged in center field.
Kempf went back out to the mound and worked a perfect fifth inning before turning the ball over to Jon Ringenberg, who allowed just one hit over the final two frames.
The Bears added a run in the fifth on back-to-back doubles from Raynor Campbell and Muncy, and BU tacked on four more runs in the seventh with the help of Kenton Gedwed's two-run single and Andrew Cooley's RBI single.
Hainsfurther finished the day 3-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs and four RBI. He's had four consecutive multi-hit games, finishing the week 11-for-16 with seven runs, 10 RBI and seven extra-base hits.
DalPorto went 3-for-3 with two runs and a pair of doubles, Baker went 2-for-3 with a run and one RBI, Campbell added a pair of hits and two runs scored, and Muncy had two hits, a run and two RBI on the day.
The Bears' 15 runs were their most since a 19-0 win over Missouri on April 11 last season, and the 18 hits were their most since knocking 20 against Northwestern State on April 7.
Baylor returns to action next weekend when it opens Big 12 Conference play with a three-game set at Oklahoma.
