COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Four straight victories over the last three days at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional propelled the Baylor doubles tandem of Roberto Maytin and John Peers to the regional final match, but the pair came up just short in the final match on Monday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The 57th-ranked and sixth-seeded pair dropped a three-set match, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, to 24th-ranked and third-seeded Jean Andersen and Ed Corrie of Texas to be eliminated. The Baylor duo is now 10-2 on the season and 2-1 against ranked opponents.
"It was a very tough match," head coach Matt Knoll said. "All four guys served well. The difference was we just had one unfocused game in both the second and third set. Texas really played well. They were bombing the ball around. It is disappointing to lose a final, but all these matches are really going to help us down the stretch."
The Baylor duo opened the day by taking out Texas' seventh-seeded Kellen Damico and David Holiner, 9-8(5), to reach the regional finals.
"Peers and Maytin have had a pretty good fall," Knoll said. "They have lost a couple tough matches to good teams. They are just getting better and better."
The Texas regional is one of 12 held around the country in October with the winners of the singles and doubles brackets advancing to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The national tournament is slated for Nov. 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, New York.
In singles, Peers reached the tournament semifinals by upsetting 12th-ranked and No. 1 seed, Austin Krajicek of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-3, in quarterfinal action on Monday morning. However, Peers was eliminated in afternoon action by dropping a 6-1, 6-2 contest to No. 24 and fourth-seed Gonzola Escobar. Peers ranked, No. 28 by the ITA and seeded fifth in the regional is now 2-3 on the season against ranked opponents and 9-3 overall, after finishing 4-1 in the event.
"John played well against Krajicek," Knoll said. "It was a comprehensive match from him. He served well, he returned well and did a super job. The next match the guy really came out hot and kind of knocked John off his feet. It was a little disappointing, but John played really good in this tournament."
Peers still has a chance to make the ITA National Indoor if he earns an at-large selection to the tournament.
The Bears' other quarterfinal participant,13th-seeded Kike Grangeiro lost in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to TCU's 14th-seeded Emmanuel Brighiu. Grangeiro finishes the tournament with a 3-1 record to up his fall mark to 6-3.
"Kike hit the wall a little bit," Knoll said. "He is still working on the condition he needs to be in to play this much tennis and just wasn't able to keep his focus at a high level. He really had a great tournament and it was great for him to get so many matches."
