THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.- The sixth-ranked men's tennis team completed its first weekend of spring action on Sunday at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup as senior
Denes Lukacs fell straight in the singles title match.
After winning his first four matches of the season, Lukacs was unable to get past fifth-seeded and 54th-ranked Bradley Klahn of Stanford in a 6-3, 6-4 match.
"Klahn played really well as he has the whole week," assistant coach Chris Brandi said. "Denes just wasn't good enough today. He still had a great tournament and we are really excited about Denes' season. Likewise it was a great start for all of our guys."
However, fellow senior Attila Bucko took down Baylor's third senior Dominik Mueller 6-4, 7-6(5) in the consolation bracket final. Bucko finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, while Mueller posted a 3-2 mark.
"Attila did a great job as did Dom of coming back from a first round loss," Brandi said. "It is always tough playing a teammate, because you know each other so well and have been around each other for so long. Attila just handle it a little bit better than Dominik today."
In back draw singles action, third-seeded and 11th-ranked Jordan Rux rebounded from Saturday's loss to post a 6-3, 6-3 win over Richard Wire of Stanford. The win gives Rux a 2-2 record for the event. Sophomore Maros Horny also won his back draw match on Sunday over Walter Kehrer of Stanford 6-3, 6-4. Horny was 3-1 on the weekend.
Baylor had two doubles teams in action on Sunday in back draw action as Horny and Julian Bley defeated Ted Kelly and Walter Kehrer of Stanford 8-3. Sergio Ramirez and Dominik Mueller also won taking down Denis Lin and Matt Kandath of Stanford 8-3.
The Bears will now return home to open their dual match season on Friday, Jan. 22 against Louisiana- Lafayette at 3 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
