BOSTON -- Baylor's Kendal Volz signed a professional contract Monday with the Boston Red Sox hours before the Major League Baseball signing deadline. The junior right-handed pitcher reports Tuesday morning to Fort Myers, Fla., where he will spend the remainder of the season in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.
A ninth-round selection in June's First-Year Player Draft, Volz was 12-15 with a 4.61 ERA in three seasons at Baylor. He logged 228 strikeouts against 85 walks over 224.2 innings. Volz leaves Baylor ninth on the program's career strikeouts list, sixth in career strikeouts per 9.0 innings and eighth in career strikeout-to-walk ratio. He was twice named honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference by the league's head coaches.
Volz is the fourth Baylor player who was drafted in June to sign a professional contract, joining Aaron Miller (Los Angeles Dodgers, first round), Shaver Hansen (Seattle Mariners, sixth round) and Dustin Dickerson (Florida Marlins, sixth round). Craig Fritsch (Detroit Tigers, eighth round), Adam Hornung (Los Angeles Angels, 19th round) and Raynor Campbell (Cleveland Indians, 31st round) remain unsigned.
