CINCINNATI - Former Baylor baseball letterman Drew Sutton was promoted to the Cincinnati Reds Major League club, the organization announced Wednesday evening. Sutton, a native of El Dorado, Ark., spent the 2004 season with the Baylor program after a two-year stint at Texarkana [Texas] Junior College.
Cincinnati's call-up of Sutton was due - in part - to several injuries on the infield. The Reds optioned reliever Jared Burton to Triple-A Louisville, where Sutton has played since being traded to the Reds from the Houston Astros in April. Sutton has posted a .255 average in 43 minor league games this season with five home runs, 19 RBI, 12 double and a pair of triples. In six professional seasons, Sutton has posted a .280 average with 66 home runs, 259 RBI, 140 doubles, 12 triples and 75 stolen bases in 597 games.
Sutton appeared in 59 of Baylor's 60 games in 2004 with 58 starts. He hit .304 with eight home runs, 40 RBI, 10 doubles, three triples and 32 walks. Sutton was selected by the Houston Astros in the 15th round of the 2004 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
The 38th former Baylor player to appear on a Major League roster, Sutton joins fellow former Bears Jason Jennings (Texas Rangers), David Murphy (Texas Rangers), Kelly Shoppach (Cleveland Indians) and Kip Wells (Washington Nationals) on the list of former Baylor players currently active in the Majors. Sutton is the seventh former Bear to appear on a Major League roster this decade; Jaime Bubela (Seattle Mariners) accomplished the feat in 2005, while Mark Saccomanno (Houston Astros) reached the Majors last season.
