SECAUCUS, N.J. - Baylor junior third baseman Raynor Campbell was taken by the Cleveland Indians with the 14th selection of the 31st round (935th overall selection) in Thursday's final day of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Campbell was the seventh and final Bear drafted from the 2009 squad.
A product of Katy-Taylor [Texas] High School, Campbell hit .243 with eight home runs, 31 RBI, eight doubles, two triples, 37 runs scored and four stolen bases. A three-year starter for the Bears, Campbell owns a .292 career average with 17 home runs, 86 RBI, 32 doubles, 106 runs and 14 stolen bases in 150 games.
Baylor's seven draft selections this season are the program's most since nine players were drafted in 2005. The Bears also had seven players drafted in 2000 and 2002, and eight players drafted in 2003. Since 1998, Major League Baseball clubs have exercised 69 draft selections on Baylor players.
This season, Baylor ranked third in the Big 12 Conference with seven draftees, trailing only Oklahoma (nine) and Oklahoma State (eight). Baylor also is one of only nine programs nationally to produce at least three players drafted in the first six rounds (200 picks) of this year's draft, joining North Carolina (five), LSU (four), Miami-FL (four), Arizona State (four), California (three), Indiana (three), Oklahoma (three) and Southern California (three).
Two Baylor signees also were drafted Thursday. Left-handed pitcher Josh Turley from Texarkana-Texas High School was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 25th selection in the 36th round (1,096th overall). Keller [Texas] High School infielder Max Muncy was selected by the Cleveland Indians with the 14th pick of the 41st round (1,235th overall).
