WACO, Texas -- Texas State scored three runs on three hits and a Baylor error to snap a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh and ninth-ranked Baylor scoreless over the final three frames en route to a 7-2 victory Wednesday night at Baylor Ballpark. Baylor (25-14) has suffered three straight losses for the first time this season. Texas State (28-10) has won nine straight and 19 of 22 since a 22-17 loss to Baylor in late March.
Jason Martinson gave Texas State the game's first lead with a two-run homer in the top of the second. That lead stood until the bottom of the seventh, when the Bears tied the game with a pair of runs on three hits. Shaver Hansen opened the inning with a homer just to the left of the batter's eye. Aaron Miller followed with single, stole second and scored on Joey Hainsfurther's one-out RBI single.
Texas State answered right away as Martinson opened the top of the seventh with a double down the right-field line. David Sibley followed with a bloop single to right, pushing Martinson to third. Bret Atwood then reached when Dustin Dickerson misplayed his chopper in front of the bag at first, allowing Martinson to score and Sibley to reach third. Paul Goldschmidt plated Sibley with a sacrifice fly, and Atwood scored on Spenser Dennis' two-out RBI single.
The Bobcats sealed the game in the ninth when Ben Theriot blasted a two-run homer over the batter's eye.
Tyler Brundridge (3-1) earned the victory in relief; he tossed 1.1 no-hit, scoreless innings with one strikeout. Starter Garret Carruth allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Carruth enjoyed a stretch of 14 consecutive batters without allowing a ball out of the infield prior to Hansen's home run.
Ross Speed (0-1) took the loss for the Bears; he allowed three runs - one of which was earned - on two hits in one-third of an inning. Starter Craig Fritsch surrendered two runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in a predetermined 3.0-inning start.
Miller was 3-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Dustin Dickerson was 0-for-3 and reached on an error; that put an end to his career-long 24-game hitting streak that was the longest in the Big 12 this season, the third-longest in Baylor history and tied for the seventh-longest in Big 12 history. Hansen and Hainsfurther both turned in two-hit nights.
Baylor returns to action this weekend, hosting 13th-ranked Oklahoma (29-11, 8-7) for a three-game Big 12 series at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears and Sooners meet Friday at 6:30 p.m. CDT, Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Saturday's game will be televised nationally on FSN.
