WACO, Texas - The third-ranked Baylor women's tennis team won the doubles point and cruised to five singles wins as the Lady Bears rolled over No. 31 Texas, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Baylor Tennis Center.
With the win, Baylor improves to 16-4 overall, 7-0 in Big 12 action. The Lady Bears claim the outright lead in the league standings, handing Texas its first conference loss this season.
"Whenever you are playing an in-state rival and a conference championship is at stake it's a pressure packed situation," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "This was another invaluable opportunity for our players to respond and grow as a team."
Baylor opened doubles play with a win at court one as No. 16 Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi rolled over No. 25 Vanja Corovic and Marija Milic, 8-4. On court two, No. 59 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk held a 7-4 lead with serve to close the doubles point. With Ormond serving for the point, the Lady Bears trailed 40-0 before holding off three break points to win the game and secure the doubles point, 8-4. No. 74 Borsanyi defeated Damico, 6-3, 6-0, while Siwosz held on to down Davison, 6-2, 7-5. On court one, No. 44 Ormond rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to win 7-5, as Ormond held serve through eight deuce points. After No. 118 Corovic rallied to win the second set, 6-4, Ormond dominated the third-set super tiebreaker to complete the 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 win.
"I'm proud of the way we completed and executed under pressure," said Scrivano. "It was especially good to see our newcomers, Csilla and Kasia, fight so hard and help the team pull through. We haven't peaked yet and we still have room to improve. We definitely want to be sharper down the stretch and continue to improve during this final phase of the season. We are looking forward to playing at College Station on Wed. A&M has strong young team and I'm sure they will have a big rowdy crowd waiting for us. Our team embraces that type of atmosphere so it should be an exciting night of college tennis."
Baylor returns to action on Wednesday as Baylor travels to College Station to face No. 33 Texas A&M.
