HOUSTON, Texas - Gregg Glime's one-out RBI double snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh, and Logan Verrett tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief as No. 6 Baylor edged Houston 3-2 in Friday's first-day action at the Houston College Classic. It was the fourth one-run victory in six games for Baylor (5-1) this season.
Adam Hornung doubled to right-center with one out in the seventh, and Glime followed with a two-bagger to left-center that scored Hornung. Glime was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple, but the damage had been done. His game-winning hit came on the heels of a 1-for-11 skid after going 2-for-4 in the season opener.
Verrett (3-0) held Houston (2-4) hitless on one walk with three strikeouts to notch his third victory in relief this season. The lone base runner he allowed was a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth. After a sacrifice bunt pushed the potential tying run to second, Verrett got a strikeout and a chopper back to the mound to end the game.
Houston starter Wes Musick (0-2) took the loss; he allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
Baylor starter Shawn Tolleson allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 6.2 innings but did not factor in the decision.
Houston took the game's first lead when Zak Presley produced the Cougars' first hit of the game - a leadoff homer in the top of the fourth. Baylor quickly answered as Dustin Dickerson led off with a single and later scored on Aaron Miller's single to center.
The Bears took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Shaver Hansen led off with his second infield single of the day, moved to second on a Joey Hainsfurther sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Dickerson followed with an RBI single through the left side of a drawn-in infield.
Houston tied the game with back-to-back doubles from Chris Wallace and Caleb Ramsey to lead off the top of the seventh. The damage that inning could have been worse for the Bears. Tolleson got Ramsey trying to score on a first-and-third bunt, and Taylor White was later caught trying to steal third. After Hansen made a diving stop on a ball down the third-base line to preserve a run, Verrett entered the game and struck out John Cannon with runners on the corners to end the inning.
Dickerson and Hansen both were 3-for-4 on the day and each scored a run.
Baylor continues play at the Houston College Classic Saturday, facing ninth-ranked UCLA. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CST. The Bears send right-hander Kendal Volz (0-0, 1.50 ERA) to the mound, opposite UCLA right-hander Gerrit Cole (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
