WACO, Texas - The No. 2 Baylor equestrian team rode past No. 9 Kansas State to a 10-6 victory, improving its season record to 11-2. The Lady Bears are 5-1 in Big 12 and have now defeated each Big 12 team.
"It was a good win, I was pleased with a lot of the rides," head coach Ellen White said. "We might have been a little bit tired and let a few points go where we shouldn't have. Kansas State did a good job and rode well. They're a good team and showed themselves well."
The Lady Bears downed the Wildcats 6-2 in Hunter Seat, with a 3-1 win in Equitation over Fences and the Flat, respectively. Senior Nicole Brown rode for her second consecutive MVP honor in Fences, while Kara Fergusson (73-60), Lisa Goldman (76-50) and Heather Healy (81-80) also tallied points. In the Flat, senior Shelby White earned her first MVP honor since facing Texas A&M on Nov. 22, improving to three on the season. Mary Smitson (86-73) and Margaret Beaudoin (75-74) also added.
In Western riding, Baylor tied Kansas State 2-2 in Horsemanship and Reining, forcing a 4-4 tie. The Wildcats edged past the Lady Bears 624.5 to 622. Junior Allison Orosz had her fifth consecutive winning ride (72-69.5) and earned MVP honors in Horsemanship. Senior Nicole McCoy also tallied points in her ride against Kansas State's Courtney Waters 70-63. Junior Madelyn Mooney (68.5-67.5) and freshman Amber Mooney (68-66.5) were the only winning rides for Baylor in Reining.
The Wildcats drop to 3-6 on the season as Baylor advances to 6-2 in its all-time series against Kansas State.
The Lady Bears will be back in action on March 7 when they host No. 3 Auburn at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
