SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Junior Payne Gniewek was one of four Baylor men's golfers to finish in the top 25, helping the Bears to a fourth-place finish at the Lone Star Invitational Tuesday.
Gniewek shot a final-round 1-under 71 to tie for fourth overall with SMU's Kelly Kraft and Texas A&M's Andrea Pavan at 6-under (70-69-71). Gniewek's fourth-place finish is his best in four tournaments as a Bear and the best since he won the Fossum/Spartan Invitational last spring while at Michigan State.
"Payne continued his solid play today," Baylor head men's golf coach Greg Priest said. "He kept around par the entire round and made a huge birdie on No. 17 which kept us in front of UTA. We were up and down all day."
Defending national champion Texas A&M swept both the team and individual titles. John Hurley bested the field by one stroke, finishing at 10-under. Texas (284-292-282=858) finished second, 10 shots behind Texas A&M (286-280-282=848). SMU (293-291-284=868) finished third, followed by the Bears in fourth at 9-over (292-285-296=873).
"We didn't play great today," Baylor head men's golf coach Greg Priest said. "We missed some putts and made some mistakes. We didn't get it done today."
Cody Paladino, Joakim Mikkelsen and Morten Bergan also finished in the top 25 for the Bears. Paladino shot a final-round 73 to finish 19th overall at 5-over (77-71-73=221). Mikkelsen finished 20th at 6-over (75-71-76=222), while Bergan finished tied for 21st at 7-over (70-76-77=223). Lorenzo Scotto finished tied for 46th at 15-over (81-74-76=231).
"At times we took one step forward, then two steps back," Priest said. "The difference was a couple of putts falling our way. We'll continue to improve and get better."
The Baylor men's golf team concludes its fall schedule when it hosts the Baylor Intercollegiate Oct. 26-27 at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas. Live scoring will be available at www.BaylorBears.com.
