SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Baylor men's golf team is in third place after shooting 1-over Sunday through two rounds of the Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch.
Baylor (292-285=577), which is ranked 42nd nationally in the latest Golfstat standings, is one shot behind fourth-ranked Texas (284-292=576) for second place. Defending national champion Texas A&M (286-280=566) leads the field by 10 strokes. Texas A&M's John Hurley finished Sunday atop the leaderboard at 9-under 135.
"We didn't start off very well in either round today," Baylor head men's golf coach Greg Priest said. "The guys hung in there and we showed our experience by not panicking and bouncing back.
"We can't continue to put ourselves behind the eight-ball right from the start," Priest said. "We need to be in a position to where we start well in the beginning."
Junior Payne Gniewek sits in fourth place after firing a 5-under 139. The Trenton, Mich., native recorded back-to-back sub-par rounds, including a second-round 3-under 69. He registered four birdies in the first round and later posted three birdies as part of a bogey-free second round. Gniewek's 36-hole score is the lowest by a Baylor Bear this season.
"Payne (Gniewek) played solid today," Priest said. "He hit the ball very well all day and made several good putts. He's a resilient player and bounced back from his last tournament at The Wolverine."
Both sophomore Norwegians Morten Bergan and Joakim Mikkelsen are tied for 16th at 2-over. Bergan shot a 2-under 70 in the first round before recording a 4-over 76 during Sunday's afternoon round. After firing a 3-over 75 in the first round, Mikkelsen shot a 1-under 71 in the afternoon. Mikkelsen posted four birdies on the back nine of the second round, including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to finish 1-under.
Cody Paladino, who recorded an eagle on the par-5 No. 5 in the second round, is tied for 21st overall at 4-over (77-71=148). Lorenzo Scotto shot 11-over (81-74=155) to finish Sunday tied for 46th.
The final round of the Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch will tee off Monday at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring for each round will be available online at www.GolfStat.com.
