Equestrian Victorious in Double-Header

WACO, Texas - The No. 4 Baylor equestrian team opened its spring competition with a victory over No. 11 Southern Methodist (4-2) and No. 12 Delaware State (11-5), advancing their record to 8-2.

"It's good to get back in with the first competition of the spring and have two wins," head coach Ellen White said. "We have three big competitions coming up and the girls are getting ready to get back into show mode."

The Lady Bears started the competition with a 3-1 win against Delaware State in Equitation over Fences. Freshman Lisa Goldman garnered MVP honors with her winning ride over E. Frayser Tuttle 80-72. Senior Nicole Brown (79-50) and freshman Kara Fergusson (80-76) also tallied points.

The Mustangs pushed past the Hornets in fences with a 3-1 victory. Southern Methodist's Mallory Olson achieved MVP honors (80-77), while Jordyn Petterson (76-72) and Kristen Collins (78-77) also added. Caroline Foltz had the single winning ride for Delaware State (79-50).

Baylor proceeded to dominate in fences when they beat Southern Methodist 3-1. Junior Kendra Vicary posted a winning ride against Kate Wilson 81-76, while Brown edged past Petterson for her second consecutive win (79-77) of the day. Goldman followed suite and earned her second MVP honor of the day (82-78), making it her fourth of the season.

As the competition moved into Equitation on the Flat, Delaware State attempted a comeback with their 3-1 defeat over the Lady Bears, which caused a 4-4 Hunter Seat tie. Baylor won the tie-breaker 551-517. Junior Heather Healy had the lone victory (89-68), while garnering MVP honors.

The Hornets forced another 4-4 Hunter Seat tie-breaker against the Mustangs with their 3-1 victory on the flat. Delaware State pulled through with the win 536-509, while MVP Kamerra Brown (83-72), Tuttle (84-71) and Ashley Butler (64-61) recorded points. Southern Methodist's Maia Vandyke had the only win with her ride against Foltz.

The Lady Bears concluded the Hunter Seat competition with Southern Methodist 4-2, with a 1-1 tie in the flat. Senior Cara Wilson received the only point for Baylor with her 86-76 win against Emily Gardner, while Collins earned MVP honors for the Mustangs (80-71).

Delaware State and Baylor continued on to Western Horsemanship, where the Lady Bears posted another 3-1 victory. Junior riders Lindsey Tomko (75.5-64) and MVP Allison Orosz (73-72) recorded wins, along with freshman Meghan Murphy (72.5-67.5).

The Lady Bears wrapped up the duel as they swept the Hornets 4-0 in Reining, totaling a 7-1 triumph in Western. Freshman Amber Mooney (70-68), sophomore Katie Buss (68.5-66) and junior Madelyn Mooney (70-68) edged past the competition, while junior Valtie Riddle was named MVP with her ride against Alicia Maynard (69.5-69).

Delaware State's season record broke even this weekend to 4-6, including the 15-2 loss to Texas Christian yesterday, Jan. 30. The Mustangs season record dropped to 2-9. The Lady Bears improved their series record against the Hornets and Mustangs to 2-0.

Baylor's next contest will take them to College Station on Feb. 7 to face the Texas A&M Aggies, who they previously defeated 15-5 on Nov. 22.
