LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Csilla Borsanyi and Jelena Stanivuk won first and second round matches at the Freeman Memorial Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Borsanyi, the No. 32 player in the nation, defeated Sasha Krupina of Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-4, in the first round and later downed Kristina Nedeltcheva of UNLV 7-6 (1), 6-1, in the second round.
Stanivuk downed UCLA's Ashley Joelson 6-4, 6-2, in the first round and defeated No. 34 Marit Boonstra of Florida in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, in the second round.
"We did what a lot of people do in Vegas, which lose more then they win," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "Thankfully we started playing better as the day progressed and there are some bright spots. We're excited about the way Jele and Csilla are playing. They have some good opportunities tomorrow."
Lenka Broosova won her opening match against Carolyn McVeigh of Stanford 6-2, 6-2, but dropped her second round match against Georgia Tech's 23rd-ranked Irina Falconi 7-6 (5), 7-5. Taylor Ormond, ranked No. 19 in the latest ITA rankings, lost her opening round match against Michael Hein of Arizona State 6-1, 6-2, but rallied to win her second round match against Georgia Tech's Christina Ngo 6-2, 6-3.
Both doubles pairs lost their opening matches as third-ranked Broosova and Borsanyi fell to Arizona State's Hein and Kelcy McKenna 8-2, and Ormond and Stanivuk lost to Arizona State's Laila and Nadia Abdala 8-4.
At the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., Baylor had to withdraw from its first-round matches when the split-squad team missed its connecting flight on Thursday and couldn't fly out until Friday morning. And then all four players lost their consolation matches on Friday.
Junior Kasia Siwosz split the first two sets against UCLA junior Stephanie Wetmore before falling, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, while sophomore Karolina Filipiak won the opening set against Oregon's Ana Cecilia Olivos before falling, 0-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Nina Secerbegovic, making her collegiate debut, lost a pro-set match against Georgia Tech's Christy Striplin, 8-2, while junior Zuzana Chmelarova lost to the Yellowjackets freshman Lynn Blau, 7-5, 6-4.
The Lady Bears return to action on Saturday as both tournaments continue play this weekend.
