Baylor and Fresno State were first-round winners in the Baylor-hosted Willis Equestrian Invitational on Friday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The Bears defeated New Mexico State 7-3 and took MVP honors in all four events. In other first round action, Fresno State and Texas Christian tied 6-6, but Fresno State won on the tiebreaker, 705.5 to 701.5.
Baylor's Heather Healy and Kendra Vicary posted Equitation over Fences wins with scores of 85 and 84 respectively. Vicary, a sophomore, earned MVP honors. Amy Lang of New Mexico State earned their lone point with an 84-75 victory over Nicole Brown. Baylor swept in Equitation on the Flat behind Shelby White's 95-point ride, which garnered MVP honors. Cara Wilson (72-63) and Mary Smitson (88-68) also recorded wins.
In Horsemanship, Allison Orosz posted the only win 73.5-72.5, earning her the MVP position. Freshman Meghan Murphy tied Codi Binkerd of New Mexico State at 72. New Mexico State's Tonna Brooks downed Lindsey Tomko 71.5-69.5. The Bears tied New Mexico State in Reining and Madelyn Mooney defeated Brooks 71-68, taking the MVP spot. Freshman Amber Mooney tied Ashley Dietz at 68 and Kim Marlowe fell short to Breanne Bertrand of New Mexico State 66.5-64.
"It's great to get started, it's a fabulous arena, great weather and fans," head coach Ellen White said. The five veterans started the whole way through and lettered. They aren't just riders, but leaders. They add depth that wasn't there before."
Action resumes Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. Second round actions sees Baylor taking on Fresno State and New Mexico State matching up against Texas Christian. The third and final round begins at 3 p.m. when Baylor faces Texas Christian and Fresno State and New Mexico State match up. Immediately following third round action, an award ceremony will take place.
