EUGENE, Ore. - Gorana Maricic recorded a match-high 17 kills on .323 hitting to lead No. 12 Oregon to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-18) win over Baylor in the final match at the Oregon Classic. Taylor Barnes and Ashlie Christenson were each named to the all-tournament team.
Maricic tallied her 17 kills against seven errors in 31 total swings as Oregon hit at a .307 clip for the match. Sonja Newcombe added 13 kills as Oregon moves to 9-1 on the season.
In the first set, Oregon used seven straight points to build a 12-5 advantage, taking advantage of three Baylor hitting errors during the run. With Baylor trailing 18-12, the Bears rattled off six straight points behind the serve of Allison King to tie the score at 18 apiece. Baylor took the lead at 22-21 after a Qian Zhang service ace, but Oregon claimed four of the last five points to win the first set.
Oregon used another point-scoring run in the second set to turn a 9-9 tie into a 16-11 lead. With Baylor trailing by five points at 21-16, the Bears scored four straight points to trim the lead to 21-20. Oregon won the final four points, including consecutive blocks to finish the set.
The two teams traded points through the first 30 serves of the third set, with neither team gaining more than a three-point lead. Oregon won nine of 10 points to build a 23-17 lead and finished off the match with a kill and a Baylor hitting error.
Katie Sanders paced the Bears with 10 kills, while Zhang added six kills. Allison King recorded a match-high 13 digs, while Anna Breyfogle chipped in with seven digs.
Oregon outblocked Baylor nine to six, marking the first time this season that Baylor failed to record more blocks than its opponent.
With the loss Baylor falls to 8-2 on the season. The Bears return to action on Wednesday evening as Baylor plays host to Texas Tech in the Bears' first conference match of the season.
