Andrew Pirtle gave Dallas Baptist an early lead with a one-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first that left runners on the corners. Matthews got out of the jam, though with an inning-ending double play.
Baylor answered with five runs on six hits and two walks in the bottom of the inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. The Bears never trailed again. Dickerson started the scoring with a two-run double down the left-field line. The Bears pushed their lead to 5-2 on RBI singles from Adam Hornung, Beamer Weems and Jon Ringenberg.
The Bears added four runs in the third. Gregg Glime and Shaver Hansen had consecutive RBI doubles, and Dickerson laced a two-run homer down the line in right. Miller walked to leadoff the fourth and later scored when Ringenberg grounded into a bases-loaded double play. Hansen tripled with one out in the seventh and scored on a passed ball to extend the Baylor lead to 11-2.
Matthews (3-1) coasted after the first inning, allowing just two hits over the next five innings. He finished with two runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 6.0 innings for the win. Matthews previously recorded six strikeouts over 6.0 innings in his first Baylor appearance: Feb. 12, 2006, against Stephen F. Austin.
Mace Thurman allowed a pair of runs on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings for his first career save.
Nick Santos led off the ninth with a double and scored on a Brandon Bantz homer to left. Dallas Baptist scored two runs on two hits in the first and ninth innings; however, the Patriots were held scoreless on three hits between those two frames.
Starter Jordan Meaker (4-1) took the loss for Dallas Baptist; he allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout over 2.1 innings.
Campbell and Weems joined Dickerson with three hits each on the night as the Bears tallied 18 hits as a team. Hansen was 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored, and Hornung was 2-for-5. Each of Baylor's nine starters had at least one hit, and eight of the nine produced at least one run.
