Zemenova Named Big 12 Player of the Week

WACO, Texas - Zuzana Zemenova was name the Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for matches between March 10-16 the league office announced on Monday. The weekly award is the sixth career accolade for Zemenova and marks the second time this season she has earned the league's award.

Zemenova went 3-0 in singles competition and 3-0 in doubles competition to help Baylor to a 3-0 record for the week, including wins over two ranked opponents. She opened the week by cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 76 Kelley Hyndman (Georgia) and teamed with Lenka Broosova to defeat Hyndman and her sister Yvette, leading Baylor to victory over the No. 6 Bulldogs.

Baylor also defeated No. 48 Virginia with Zemenova leading the way with a win over No. 124 Amanda Rales, 6-0, 6-2 and tallied another doubles victory 8-3.

Against Mississippi, the duo knocked off No. 32 Nika Koukhartchouck and Karen Nijssen 8-5 before knocking off Koukhartchouck 6-2, 7-5. Zemenova did not drop a set all week and only lost 12 games in three singles matches.

Earlier this season, Zemenova earned the conference's first weekly award of the spring season. Then ranked 24th nationally, she posted a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles last week, including wins over No. 10 Riza Zalameda (UCLA), No. 11 Melanie Gloria (Fresno State), No. 72 Sylvia Kosakowski (Pepperdine) and Sasha Kulikova (Wake Forest).

In doubles, Zemenova teamed with sophomore Lenka Broosova to knock off the nation's top-ranked doubles team of Gloria and Tinesta Rowe of Fresno State by a score of 8-3.

The weekly award marks the third straight for Baylor players. The Lady Bears have swept all three awards of the dual match season. Taylor Ormond was selected as the player of the week on March 10. She posted a 2-0 singles and 2-0 doubles record as Baylor opened conference play with road wins at Iowa State (6-1) and previously undefeated No. 68 Nebraska (7-0).

The nation's 19th-ranked singles player won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 against Iowa State's Kara Hickey after moving up to the No. 2 singles position. Against Nebraska she defeated Jana Albers 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Ormond paired with Jelena Stanivuk as the No. 41 ranked duo topped Erin Karonis and Chrissy Derouin (Iowa State) and Maria Rin and Wivica Swarting of Nebraska.

Baylor returns to action this weekend as the Lady Bears return to conference play with a 12 noon match at Texas Tech on Saturday. Baylor returns home next Tuesday as the Lady Bears play host to top-ranked Northwestern at 5:30 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
