NO. 19 BAYLOR (11-1) 79, PORTLAND STATE (10-4) 66
FERRELL CENTER - WACO, TEXAS
DEC. 29, 2008 - ATTENDANCE: 5,544
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
On the guard play:
"At times I thought we had a bunch of great highlights. Henry (Dugat) had 5 assists to 1 turnover, Tweety (Carter 5 to 1 and CJ (Curtis Jerrells) 4 to 1. All of them moved and passed the ball really well and got good looks for everybody."
On the importance to getting off to a good start with three games in five days:
"It is definitely important especially because the last couple of games we have not really played as well. I thought we were a bit more focused and energized, especially defensively to start the second half, we were very good."
On Portland State's run late in the second half:
"It is frustrating from the standpoint that to be a great team you can't let teams back into (the game) because sooner or later they are going to take advantage of it. It is a teachable moment for us to continue to work on."
Baylor Senior Guard Curtis Jerrells On the game:
"We did what we need to and we did a good job of getting stops and limiting (Jeremiah) Dominquez touches as well as not allowing (Phil Nelson) get a lot of open looks. Without those two they can't really do much so we did a good job of taking them away for that stretch."
Baylor Senior Forward Kevin Rogers On the game:
"We just know that when we come out and play on our `A' game each and every night we can beat anybody in the country. Coming in, we knew they were a good team. With all of the preparation and us coming in focused got us the win tonight."
Baylor Sophomore Guard LaceDarius Dunn On playing three games this week:
"With three games in five days we just have to prepare. We have to come in, put the last game behind us and focus on the next game. We just have to take them one game at a time and go out there and play our `A' game."
Portland State Head Coach Ken Bone On the game:
"They are pretty good. There is a reason why they are ranked as high as they are nationally. (Baylor's) guards as so good on both ends of the court when they want to be. Offensively they are very difficult to stop for most any team. Defensively they give you a lot of problems because of their quickness and their length, especially against us. We were very impressed with Baylor. Coach Drew has done a great job and I think they are going to continue to have a great season."
On the comparisons between Baylor and Gonzaga:
"Baylor is much more athletic and longer. They have a post presence in Rogers and a few of those other kids. Gonzaga really doesn't throw the ball in the paint that much and they really didn't take advantage of our lack of height like Baylor did. Baylor exposed us in most every area of the game: inside and outside, on transition and quickness. They did a good job."
