THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Baylor men's tennis closed out action at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Monday in southern California when Lars Poerschke claimed the singles championship and sophomores Attila Bucko and Denes Lukacs won the doubles title.
Poerschke, a senior and the tournament's second seed, downed top-seeded Robert Farah of USC in an extremely close match, winning 7-5, 7-5. With the win, Poerschke becomes the second Bear to claim the Sherwood Cup singles championship after Matija Zgaga's 2006 triumph.
In another close match, fourth-seeded Bucko and Lukacs claimed victory over third-seeded Ted Kelly and Blake Muller of Stanford, 9-7.
The Bears open their dual match season this weekend when they host a rare tripleheader on Saturday, Jan. 26. Baylor will take on Prairie View A&M at 9 a.m., Southeast Louisiana at 1 p.m., and UT-Arlington at 7 p.m.
