Men's Tennis Hosts Impressive Field

WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis program opens its fall season hosting the seventh annual H.E.B. Baylor Invitational, Sept. 21-23 at the Baylor Tennis Center on campus.

This year's tournament consists of 21 schools with over 120 student-athletes participating. The impressive field includes 25 players currently ranked among the FILA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings. Seven players are participating that are ranked among the ITA's top 50 include: No. 7 Erling Tveit (Ole Miss), No. 18 Robbye Poole (Ole Miss), No. 22 Bojan Szumanski (Texas Tech) No. 23 Dimitar Kutrovsky (Texas), No. 34 Jerry Makowski (Texas A&M), No. 37 Conor Pollock (Texas A&M) and No. 49 Moritz Baumann (Wisconsin).

The tournament will consist of two 64-player singles draws, green (A) and gold (B), and a 32-team draw in Green doubles and 16-team Gold doubles draw.

Teams participating include: Baylor, Boise State, Cal Baptist, Kentucky, UL-Lafayette, Lamar, Laredo CC, Louisville, Mississippi, New Mexico State, Oklahoma, San Diego, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-CC, UT-Arlington, UT-San Antonio, Texas Tech, Wichita State and Wisconsin.

Six Baylor players will participate in the tournament's green draw, including juniors Matt Brown (No. 110) and David Galic, sophomores Attila Bucko, Denes Lukacs (No. 78) and Dominik Mueller (No. 61) and newcomer Jordan Rux (No. 113).

Last season Baylor's Michal Kokta defeated Ole Miss' Tveit to become the fifth straight Baylor player to win the singles championship. UT-Arlington's Andy Leber claimed the singles championship the first year of the tournament (2001) but since then Baylor players have won title five consecutive titles. Benedikt Dorsch won in 2002 and `03, Matija Zgaga triumphed in 2004 and Lars Poerschke claimed the 2005 crown.

After this weekend's tournament, the Bears will compete in four more collegiate events during the fall competition:

Sept. 29-Oct. 7 - at Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships, Tulsa, Okla.
Oct. 20-23 - at Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championships - Austin, Texas
Nov. 1-4 - at ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships - Columbus, Ohio
Nov. 1-4 - at Texas Invitational - Austin Texas
