OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Fifth-seeded and 17th-ranked Texas A&M scored five runs in the first two innings and never let off the gas en route to a 14-6 victory over sixth-seeded Baylor in Sunday's title game at the Big 12 Conference Championship. Texas A&M (44-16) wins its first Big 12 Championship title game in three tries, while Baylor (34-25) falls to 0-5 in such games.
Paul Miles' two-run triple in the bottom of the second pulled the Bears to within three runs at 5-2. After the Aggies scored two runs in the top of the fifth, Baylor scored three in the bottom half on Shaver Hansen's solo home run, Chase Gerdes' RBI single and Beamer Weems' RBI double.
That cut Texas A&M's lead to two runs at 7-5, but Baylor could get no closer as the Aggies added a run in the sixth, four in the seventh and two in the eighth. Gerdes' seventh-inning sacrifice fly closed the scoring for the Bears.
Baylor starter Wade Mackey (4-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 1.2 innings. Gary Campfield (2-0) earned the victory in relief, holding Baylor to one run on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Texas A&M starter Scott Migl was touched for five runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
Baylor led all teams with three players on the 11-man all-championship team: Weems, Matt Czimskey and Kendal Volz. Texas A&M catcher Craig Stinson was named most valuable player.
Miles enjoyed the first three-hit game of his career Sunday, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Gerdes was 2-for-3 with a walk; he finishes his career with 19 hits in Big 12 Championship play, tying David Murphy's school record. Dustin Dickerson, Hansen and Weems also had two-hit games. Weems collected his school-record 11th career RBI in Big 12 Championship play.
Czimskey saw his 19-game hitting streak end, going 0-for-4 before giving way to Gregg Glime behind the dish in the eighth. Raynor Campbell also failed to reach safely for the first time since the first game of a March 31 doubleheader at Oklahoma State, snapping a 29-game streak.
Baylor now awaits word from the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. The 64-team tournament field will be announced Monday at 11:30 a.m. CDT on ESPN.
