WACO, Texas - The No. 4 Baylor men's tennis won two in a row today at the Baylor Tennis Center sweeping St. Edwards 7-0 and UT-Arlington 7-0. The two victories improve Baylor's record to 18-2 overall, 2-0 in conference play.
"It was great to play so much tennis today. Our guys handled the day well and everyone was focused. It was a nice way to come back from the Easter holiday. It should prepare us for the tough matches ahead," said head coach Matt Knoll.
The Bears got off to a good start in their first match of the day against St. Edwards taking an early lead in doubles play as Dominik Mueller and Denes Lukacs quickly defeated Tyler Lyon and Jacob Walley 8-3. Attila Bucko and Michal Kokta secured the doubles point with an 8-2 downing of Boris Barrios and Justin Raiti, while Baylor's duo of David Galic and Matt Brown gained another win for the Bears with an 8-6 victory over Walter Valarezo and Kenton Venhuizen.
In singles, the Bears continued to dominate sweeping all six matches in two sets. Bucko gained Baylor its second point with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Justin Raiti on court five, while Galic defeated Tommy Collins 6-1, 6-2 in his first dual singles match of the season. Brown followed shortly after clinching the match for the Bears with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Walter Valarezo. No. 93 Mueller defeated Boris Barrios 6-2, 6-0 in a two set match while Denes Lukacs added another win for the Bears with a 6-4, 6-1 downing of Jacob Walley.
The Bears continued their success as they faced UT-Arlington, securing three wins to claim the doubles point. Baylor's tandem of Zgaga and David Galic, ranked at the No. 18 spot, quickly downed Daniel Omana and Gonzalo Bienzobas 8-1. Kokta and Mueller sealed the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Diego Mattar and Javier Herrera, while Baylor's team of Lukacs and Bucko defeated Alberto Agis and Dmitry Minkins 8-6.
Mueller defeated Herrera 6-1, 6-2 to start off singles for the Bears. Zgaga added another point for the Bears with a 6-4, 6-0 downing of Agis, while Brown clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Omana. Lukacs earned another win for the Bears defeating Minkin 6-1, 6-1, while No. 16 Kokta bested Mattar 6-2, 6-3 on court one. Bucko defeated Bienzobas in a three set match 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
The Bears are back in action Thursday, April 12 when they travel to Athens, Georgia to face the University of Georgia at 5 p.m.
