Baylor (4-3) and Stephen F. Austin (2-7) pitchers combined for 25 strikeouts, a Baylor Ballpark record for a nine-inning game and the third-highest single-game total regardless of innings in the facility's nine-year history. The Bears also improved to 19-2 when playing for a three-game sweep at Baylor Ballpark. Baylor has won 13 consecutive such games. The Bears' last series finale loss after winning the first two games of a three-game series at home was March 4, 2001, a 5-4 10-inning loss to Missouri.
SFA starter Lance Luetge was perfect until Dustin Dickerson reached on an error to leadoff the fifth. Two batters later, Aaron Miller broke up Luetge's no-hit bid with an RBI triple to right-center. Gregg Glime worked a two-out walk, and Miller scored on a first-and-third double steal.
The Bears' lead was short-lived, though, as Noel Trevino led off the sixth with his second double of the day and scored two batters later on Jared Pitts' third home run of the season.
Baylor recaptured the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Raynor Cambell led off with a double down the line in left, moved to third on a Ben Booker sacrifice and scored on a Beamer Weems RBI groundout.
The Bears put the game out of reach with a seven-run eighth. Weems started and capped the seven-run eighth, plating the first run with an RBI double and the seventh run with an RBI single.
Mandel (1-1) established a career high for strikeouts in his second consecutive start after striking out five against Vanderbilt last Sunday. He allowed two runs on five hits and one walk over 6.0 innings. Mandel became the first Baylor pitcher to record 10 or more strikeouts in a game since June 12, 2005, when Mark McCormick struck out 10 against Clemson in the second game of the NCAA Waco Super Regional.
Tim Matthews pitched the seventh and eighth innings perfectly with one strikeout. Nick Cassavechia issued a single and a walk with two strikeouts in the ninth.
Luetge (2-1) suffered the tough-luck loss, holding Baylor to three runs, one earned, on two hits and one walk with nine strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
Campbell, Miller and Weems had two hits each, while Weems finished with three RBI. Miller hit .583 (7-for-12) with two doubles, two triples, five RBI and two stolen bases in the three-game series.
Baylor continues its nine-game home stand Tuesday, hosting Texas-San Antonio for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears are expected to send freshman right-hander Kendal Volz (0-0, 5.40 ERA) to the mound.
