AUSTIN, Texas - All three of Baylor's doubles teams and Denes Lukacs in singles advanced to the quarterfinals in the ITA South Central Regional Championships at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus.
Lukacs continued his impressive play posting his seventh straight singles win in advancing to the tournament quarterfinals. The sophomore from Eger, Hungary, has won 11 of his last 12 contests and is 13-2 during fall play. He will take on UL-Lafayette's Piotr Banas at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
All three doubles teams moved on the the quarterfinals with Sunday triumphs. Attila Bucko and Dominik Mueller defeated Jonah Kane-West/Rook Schellenberg (Texas) 8-1, Matt Brown and Jordan Rux beat Dennis Polyakov/Hoony Shin (Rice) 8-4 and second-seeded David Galic and Lukacs downed Maciej Bogusz/Filip Kanczula (Lamar) 8-3. In Monday action Bucko and Mueller will take on Texas Tech's Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic and two Baylor teams will play each other when Brown and Rux meet up with Galic and Lukacs.
Even though four players fell out of contention, they certainly didn't go down without a fight as every singles match where the Bears were eliminated went three sets.
Mueller, Rux, Galic and Lukacs all won round of 32 matches. Brown was the only Bear to lose but put up a valiant effort despite a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 setback.
Lukacs was the lone round of 16 winner when he downed Ed Corrie of Texas 6-3, 7-6. Mueller fell to Texas' Kellen Damino 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and Rux lost to Texas A&M's Conor Pollock 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. SMU's Robin Fahgen defeated Galic 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.
In consolation action, Bucko has advanced to the quarterfinals with three consolation bracket victories. He will take on the winner of the Breler/Gonzalo Bienzobas (UTA) match.
"We had a chance to have a very special tournament today but didn't quite pull it off," said head coach Matt Knoll. "Everyone competed well and we learned a lot about ourselves today. We know what we have to work on to improve our play. Additionally, I thought all three doubles teams played extremely well."
The singles finalists and doubles champions from each regional earn berths into the November 1-4 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
