LAS CRUISES, N.M. - The final round of play at the Price's Give Em Five Intercollegiate did not play out as scripted for Baylor as the women's golf team fell three spots in the standings, finishing in a ninth-place tie at the New Mexico State Golf Club in Las Cruises, N.M.
After holding the individual lead following two rounds of play, freshman Lene Hafsten-Morch (Billingstad, Norway) carded an 8-over-par, 80 to finish tied for 11th place. Hafsten-Morch's three-round total of 224 (72-72-80), her lowest 54-hole collegiate stroke total, still paced the way for Baylor, but gave way for the competition to leap past the Bears.
"Lene struggled on the course today and didn't respond the way I had hoped she would," said head coach Sylvia Ferdon. "She told me she was nervous after seeing her name at the top of the leaderboard, but she's has to learn to play through it if she wants to win. At the end of the day your name has to be at the top in order to win."
Just two members of the team, sophomore Hannah Burke (Hertfordshire, England) and senior Sian Reddick (Folkestone, England) lowered their stroke totals from round two. Burke recorded a 1-over-par, 73, and finished in a 15th-place tie (77-76-73=226) while Reddick fired a third-round 80, finishing the event tied for 62nd place (77-83-80=240).
"It was good to see Hannah and Sian play better rounds than they did yesterday," Ferdon said. "We just have to figure out how to put all the pieces of the puzzle together instead of having a few people shoot low each day."
Freshman Morgan Chambers turned in her second 79 of the tournament in the third round after shooting a 4-over par, 75, in the second round. She finished the event in a 38th-place tie.
Natalie Hocott, a sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, had her third-round score dropped from the team score after turning in an 85. Hocott's 85 was the highest Baylor round at the tournament and marked the second consecutive round that Hocott added strokes after carding a 78 and 81 in the first and second rounds, respectively.
Sophomore Kristen Hendrix also made the trip for Baylor, competing as an individual. Hendrix shot 83 in each of her first two rounds before recording a 4-over-par, 76, in the final round; she finished the event tied for 67th place.
Baylor will return to action on Oct. 29 when the Bears travel to Kiawah Island, S.C., to compete in the Edwin Watts Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by College of Charleston at the Oak Point Golf Course at Kiawah Island Resort.
