WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis team posted a 5-0 decision to the University of Hawai'I on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex in both team's season opener. Due to inclement weather, two singles matches were not completed.
The Bears, who reached the NCAA Championship semifinals in 2006, swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Dominik Mueller and senior Matija Zgaga posted an 8-3 win at No. 1, veterans Michal Kokta and Lars Poerschke, playing at the No. 2 spot, won 8-2 and rookie Attila Bucko and sophomore David Galic registered an 8-3 triumph. Due to inclement weather, singles matches at No. 2 and No. 4 were halted before completion of play. At the top spot, Poerschke whipped Sascha Heinemann, 6-0, 6-1 and Mueller downed Derrick Lajola 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Brown and Bucko also posted singles wins for the Bears, playing at No. 5 Brown defeated Jeff Fitch 6-3, 6-2 while Bucko defeated Spencer Mendoza, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6.
The Bears next action be Jan. 12-14 when they travel to Los Angeles to compete in the Sherwood Classic.
