WACO, Texas - Defending champion Matija Zgaga and Michal Kokta both lost in the quarterfinals of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club at Los Angeles, Calif., on Saturday.
Kokta, the tournament's No. 2 seed and ranked No. 17 nationally, lost in straight sets to USC's Dejan Cvetkovic 6-4, 6-2.
Zgaga saw his two-year seven-match win streak at the Sherwood Classic come to and end with a three set loss to Haythem Abid of UCLA. Zgaga, a senior, prevailed in the first set 6-3 but Abid rebounded and took the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals.
The Bears will hit the road again next weekend at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas, before hosting their home opener against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
