WACO, Texas -
Baylor shortstop Beamer Weems was named to the 2006 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, announced Thursday by Collegiate Baseball. Weems is the first Baylor player so honored since Ryan LaMotta and Abe Woody were selected in 2003.
A product of Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Va., Weems hit .297 with eight home runs and tied Zach Dillon for the team lead with 47 RBI. Weems' home run total was the most by a Baylor freshman since Matt Williams had nine in 1998 and the most by a Baylor shortstop since Jace Brewer also had eight in 2000. Weems, a true freshman, also led Baylor with 48 runs, tied for the team lead with 14 doubles and established a school record with 17 sacrifices.
Weems' offensive production was even stronger in the postseason as he hit .400 (10-for-25) with eight runs, three doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage in three games at the Big 12 Tournament and four games at the NCAA Houston Regional. He was named all-tournament at the Houston Regional.
However, Weems made his mark on defense, committing only 10 errors in 262 total chances for a .962 fielding percentage. He committed only two fielding errors all season, those coming in the second and 61st games of a 63-game season. Weems started all but one game at shortstop, including 26 of 27 Big 12 Conference games. He posted a .991 fielding percentage in Big 12 games, committing only one error in 109 total chances.
Weems is the eighth Baylor player to earn Freshman All-America Honors from Collegiate Baseball. He is the first middle infielder so honored and joins Mike Huggins (first base, 2000) and Michael Griffin (third base, 2002) as the only infielders so honored.
