Box Score
AUSTIN, Texas - No. 24 Baylor out-hit No. 8 Texas 13-7 in Saturday's Big 12 Conference series finale at Disch-Falk Field, but the Longhorns got their hits when it mattered most for a 5-4 victory over the Bears. The win gave Texas (27-12, 12-2) the series sweep, returning the favor after Baylor (22-15, 7-8) swept last year's series.
In the series, Baylor was 8-for-48 with runners in scoring position, while Texas was 9-for-31. That trend continued Saturday for the Bears, who were 2-for-12. The Longhorns tallied 11 two-out RBI on the weekend, while Baylor did not have a two-out RBI until Seth Fortenberry's run-scoring triple in the eighth inning of Saturday's loss.
Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Texas got a leadoff double from Chais Fuller and Jordan Danks followed with an RBI single to center. After consecutive groundouts, Chase Wheeless singled home Danks for the game-deciding run.
Baylor had the tying run at third with two outs in the eighth after Fortenberry's RBI triple. However, Texas reliever Kyle Walker snagged Zach Dillon's sharp come-backer to end the inning and the threat.
The Bears stranded 39 runners in the series, including 24 in scoring position.
Dillon did his part, though, going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI single in the third that gave the Bears a 2-1 lead. However, Texas answered quickly with two runs on a hit, an errant pickoff attempt, a sacrifice fly, a walk, a balk and a wild pitch.
The Bears immediately tied the score in the top of the fourth but missed an opportunity for a big inning. Chase Gerdes and Kevin Sevigny led off the inning with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners. Beamer Weems then grounded into a double play that scored Gerdes but also cleared the bases.
Baylor starter Tim Matthews (3-4) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Texas starter Kyle McCulloch (5-4) worked through several tough spots in 5.0 innings of work to earn the victory. He allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Austin Wood pitched a perfect ninth with one strikeout for his fourth save of the season.
Sevigny joined Dillon with a three-hit afternoon, and Weems and Ben Booker added two hits apiece. Dillon finished the series 8-for-14 with three walks for a .647 on base percentage.
Baylor returns to action Tuesday, April 18, hosting Texas State at Baylor Ballpark. First pitch between the Bears and the Bobcats is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT. Baylor defeated Texas State 4-3 at San Marcos in late February.
