Seattle, Wash - The No. 8 Baylor men's tennis team shut down No. 16 University of Pennsylvania today in day two of the USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships.
After falling to No. 9 Duke yesterday, today's match marked Baylor's first round in the consolation bracket. Pennsylvania was defeated by No. 1 Florida yesterday and will face No. 11 South Carolina tomorrow.
Baylor took an early lead when Lars Poershcke and Jon Reckewey shut down Jonathan Boyn and Mikhail Bekker 8-2 in doubles. Matija Zgaga and David Galic couldn't post a doubles win falling to Jason Pinsky and Joseph Lok 8-6 but the team of Will Ward and Matt Brown put the point away for the Bears defeating Brandon O'Gara and Justin Fox 8-4.
Baylor continued to dominate the match winning three straight singles matches to give Baylor the win. Baylor's No. 1 Poerschke defeated Bekker 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. Brown picked up the next win for the Bears over Jimmy Fairbanks in a 6-3, 6-2 decision. Ward clenched the match for the Bears defeating Boym 6-3, 6-4.
Zgaga, Reckewey, and Vladimir Portnov's matches did not finish.
Next up, Baylor will face No. 13 Florida State tomorrow at 11 a.m. PCT at the Seattle Tennis Club. Florida State upset No. 11 South Carolina 4-1 earlier this morning to advance in the consolation bracket.
