WACO, Texas -- Baylor sophomore shortstop Beamer Weems was named to the 2007 preseason Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, the College Baseball Foundation announced Tuesday. Dedicated to the memory of late Texas Tech shortstop and assistant coach Brooks Wallace, the award is in its fourth year and is given annually to the nation's top collegiate baseball player.
Weems, a 2006 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America selection, hit .297 with eight home runs, 47 RBI, 14 doubles and five triples as a true freshman last season. He started all but one of Baylor's 63 games at shortstop. Weems was one of only five freshmen nationally to start at least 40 games at shortstop and commit 10 or fewer errors.
A product of Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Va., Weems hit .323 with two home runs and 18 RBI in 26 Big 12 games. He was Baylor's hottest bat during the postseason, hitting .400 with four home runs, 10 RBI, three doubles, eight runs scored and a 1.000 slugging percentage in seven games.
The Watch List will be trimmed to 12 semifinalists in late May 2007. The selection committee, comprised of coaches, sports information and media relations contacts, former winners and media, will narrow the list ot three finalists following the NCAA Super Regionals. The winner will be announced at a banquet in Lubbock, Texas, following the College World Series; the banquet will be televised on Fox Sports Net and Fox College Sports.
Baylor opens its 2007 season Feb. 9-11 at the Astros Minute Maid Park College Classic in Houston.
