FORT WORTH, Texas - Two of Baylor's men's tennis players advanced to the singles quarterfinals in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's South Central Championships on Sunday. Junior Lars Poerschke and freshman Dominik Mueller each won two matches on Sunday to stay alive in the tournament.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event, hosted by TCU, will earn spots in the November 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
Poerschke, the tournament's No. 1 seed, topped TCU's Chris Biro 6-2, 7-6 in the round of 32 then downed Christoph Muller of Rice 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the tournament quarterfinals. Sixth-seeded Matt Brown was victorious over Mike Beatty of Texas A&M in his round of 32 matchup 6-1, 7-6. Brown fell in the round of 16 to Texas Tech's Dimitrio Martinez in a three-set marathon 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Freshman Denes Lukacs, the No. 10 seed, was eliminated from competition in his first match of the day, a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 loss to TCU's Kriegler Brink. Baylor's other freshman, Dominik Mueller, posted a three-set round of 32 victory over Texas Tech's Sinisa Markovic 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Mueller breezed into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 upset win over second-seeded Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M.
In doubles, both teams advanced to the Monday's quarterfinals with victories. Lukacs and Mueller eeked out an 8-6 win over Rook Schellenberg and Josh Zavala of Texas while Galic and Brown downed Greg Jones and James Wilson of Texas Tech 8-5.
